Safe, Expert Circumcision with Your Baby’s Comfort in Mind

Circumcision is one of the most common procedures performed in newborn boys. Although it is usually a straightforward procedure, careful assessment, the correct technique and appropriate pain control are important for achieving a safe procedure and a good cosmetic result.

Dr. AbdulRahman AlShafei provides circumcision for newborns and infants in Bahrain, with particular attention to safety, pain control, comfort and cosmetic outcome.

The Plastibell Technique

For suitable newborns and infants under 6 months, we commonly use the Plastibell technique under local anaesthesia.

A small, appropriately sized ring is placed during circumcision and remains temporarily while the area heals. It then separates and falls off naturally, usually within 8–10 days.

Every baby is examined beforehand to ensure the technique is appropriate.

What to Expect on the Day

On arrival, a topical anaesthetic cream is applied for approximately 30 minutes.

During this time, Dr. AbdulRahman AlShafei will examine your baby and explain the procedure, technique and, most importantly, how to care for your baby afterwards.

Your baby is then taken to our circumcision room, where additional local anaesthesia is given before the procedure. The circumcision itself usually takes only 3–5 minutes.

After the Circumcision

Most babies remain comfortable and feed normally soon after the procedure.

Aftercare is simple:

  • Gentle washing with warm water

  • Regular application of the recommended topical ointment

  • Diaper changes preferably every 2–3 hours until the Plastibell falls off

  • Paracetamol for the first 2 days as advised

If a Plastibell is used, it usually falls off naturally within 8–10 days and should not be pulled or removed at home.

You will receive clear aftercare instructions before leaving, including what to expect during healing and when to contact us.
